CREDIT ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION

According to a 2019 report from the United Way of Pennsylvania, 55% of Philadelphia County residents
have incomes less than the basic cost of living for the state. This means that over half of Philadelphia
families are struggling to make ends meet, making our local population particularly vulnerable to
predatory lending, payday loans, and other negative financial practices. As bankruptcy professionals
CBAP volunteers have seen the costly and devastating results of these predatory practices. That is why
CBAP has joined the nationwide Credit Abuse Resistance Education (CARE) network of financial literacy
educators.

In the United States, a little over half of all adults are financially literate, according to a 2014 survey by
Standard & Poor’s Rating Services. Financial illiteracy can have a profound effect on a person’s ability to
save for their future, increase their risk of higher debts, and putting their limited income into jeopardy.
In line with our mission, CBAP seeks to empower Philadelphia families, including students, young adults
and parents, to make smarter financial decisions and to maximize their limited incomes.

CBAP is looking for volunteers, including attorneys, bankruptcy attorneys, restructuring professionals
and others with an interest in teaching students, parents, and community members smart financial
practices. Our volunteers are uniquely qualified to engage people in meaningful discussions based on
their first-hand personal or professional experiences.
